Javier Laguna is a musician and composer originally from Caracas, Venezuela. His primary music education was classical guitar, which he began studying from an early age. Later, he developed a passion for electronic music and synthesized sounds giving a complete turnaround to his musical productions. When he arrived in Ireland, Javier enrolled in Pulse Recording College, where he graduated in sound engineering and music technology. From there he gained a vast amount of experience working with audio and video within the television industry. Javier was also a co-founder of Movement an artistic collective where he promoted and performed events with international producers such as Aril Brikha and Robert Babicz. Javier decided to expand his knowledge and passion in sound design by enrolling in MMT, at Trinity College Dublin. This allowed him to further his interest in media art and sound design, it also allowed him expand his knowledge in sound synthesis and hone his skills as a composer and producer.
"In Motus" is a large-scale composition, which explores urban soundscapes. Inspired by composers such as Barry Truax and his extensive work in granular synthesis, In Motus also makes reference to the work of Pablo Freiberg and examines compositional tools such as granulation, spectral analysis and re-synthesis. Sampled environmental sounds are the sole source material for this composition, which is comprised of two elements. The first element is a fixed stereo tape part based on pre-recorded urban soundscapes. The second element, which involves an interactive approach based on the dynamic point of view of a skater, addresses the design and development of a bespoke interface for real-time control and manipulation of various components of the piece through the movement of a skateboard measured using motion sensors. The skater modifies the timbre and space of the composition in real time.
