Neil Smyth is a musician, composer and visual artist from Dublin. He is a classically trained guitarist and holds a BA in Fine Art Media from NCAD, where he produced video and photography-based work. After graduating from NCAD he co-founded Dublin band The Gorgeous Colours, with whom he has recorded and toured extensively. A longstanding interest in electronic music motivated him to explore synthesis, sound design and production in his free time, and the MMT M.Phil provided an opportunity to develop these skills further under formal tuition. Neil chose to pursue a mix of technology-based modules such as digital signal processing, spatial audio and computer programming languages, alongside the more traditional disciplines of composition and instrumentation. His thesis will see the development of a new user interface for granular synthesis, under the supervision of Liam O’Sullivan.
